“The Maldives, famous for its pristine beaches and scuba diving, has declared a state of emergency after a fire at the capital’s sole water sewage treatment plant led to a shortage of drinking water in the Indian Ocean archipelago.”
A fire in the Maldives has left 10,000 people without drinking water, reports The Guardian.
“The Treasury is detailing projects that will receive a share of the £2.3bn already earmarked for capital spending on flood defences over the next six years to improve protection for 300,000 homes, as part of plans for range of infrastructure investments.”
As The Guardian writes, much-needed flood defence spending will be distributed to areas of England often affected by floods.
“This spate of December rainfall we’ve been having is good news, obviously, for California’s drought, but everyone should understand just how much more rain we would need to see an end of the drought by spring. Short answer: a whole lot.”
